We the Providers

You are paying for the people who raised you and the people you are raising. The consequences of this debt shows up on both sides.

You are the one standing between both generations, and the arithmetic.

    • The national debt is already in your mortgage payment.

    • In late 2032, your mom's $2,000 Social Security check becomes $1,560.

    • Your mortgage. Yale's Budget Lab estimates that federal borrowing added since 2015 has raised the cost of a 30-year mortgage on a median-priced home by about $2,500 a year. If you are buying, moving or refinancing, that is built into your rate.

    • Your kids' college. Federal student loan rates are set by law each May, based on what the government pays to borrow for ten years. This year a Parent PLUS loan costs 9.07 percent and an undergraduate loan costs 6.52 percent.

    • Your paycheck. The Congressional Budget Office says a growing debt pulls money away from private investment, and over time that means lower pay.

    • Your taxes. About 19 cents of every federal tax dollar goes to interest this year. Within ten years the projection is 31 cents, and those are the years when most people in your position expect to earn the most.

    • Your car and your business. A typical auto loan costs about $120 more a year, and a typical small business loan about $770 more.

  • This year the country will pay about $1 trillion in interest on the debt. That is more than the entire military budget, and none of it buys anything new.

Picture what $1 trillion a year could do for your kids or your parents, or how much of it could have stayed in your paycheck. Whatever you pictured, that money is already spent, and next year's interest bill is projected to be bigger.

  • A constitutional amendment that ties the debt to the size of the economy. You make it a condition of your vote, we match you to your district, and every candidate running there sees how many of their own voters have done the same.

  • You already have two jobs, and one of them doesn't pay. So this asks you for one decision and your address. We find your district, add you to the count, and make sure the candidates running there see it.

  • We match you to your district and add you to the count. Any candidate who wants your vote will have to look at that number. We only share the count, never your information.
